To say the least, he's charismatic and talks about game design quite often. Also wrote the level editing tools, and iirc was more senior at id than the other id level designers.

Something else could be that e1 gets significant attention because it was the shareware episode that everyone could play for free and thus has more exposure.

We could also consider how much negging people do on sandy peterson levels in d2.

it's because john's levels tend to have aged a lot better than sandy's for modern sensibilities. they also look a lot less abstract which makes them more palatable

Romero acted as PR figure more than others in Id, that's why. Carmack also is nice to be PR figure but he was more into other stuff, like coding. The more you appear on screens, the more you talk to fans, the more your recognition becomes. You rarely can be a good PR figure and like a good level designer or programmer at the same time

it's kinda bill gates kind of thing. He appeared in ads many times, he looked like an american dream kind of guy. Nice PR figure. His "640 kilobytes is enough for everyone" pearl appeared proves that he actually knew nothing about programming

You've just nailed the reason why modern FPS suck ass.

let's get some top shelf anti-modern design rolling then.
